Cambridgeshire - A Guide to This Beautiful County
Cambridgeshire is one of the 47 shire counties of England and Wales with a population of around 750000. It lies to the east of England, and is landlocked, though its borders reach within a few miles of the sea and the great inlet called the Wash. The topography of Cambridgeshire is basically flat and it is crossed by two major rivers, the Nene and the Ouse, with its tributary the Cam.
Cambridgeshire is twinned with Kreis Viersen in Germany. It is probably best known for the world famous Cambridge University which has helped produce some of the greatest minds in history such as Professor Steven Hawking author of "A Brief History of Time" and "The Universe in a Nutshell". It is also the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and Samuel Pepys.
Cambridgeshire is a beautiful county with a variety of enticing things to see and places to visit. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford in Cambridgeshire is Europe's top aviation museum, home to over 120 historic aircraft, many in flying condition. Wilburton in Cambridgeshire is well known for its' Beer Festival, Fireworks and Theatre Group and The Great Fen Project area in Cambridgeshire is home to a wonderful variety of wildlife, with an impressive list of rare plants and animals. Cambridgeshire is also rich is historical sites, many of which are open to the public.
There are two major cities in Cambridgeshire, namely Cambridge and Peterborough. These two cities are like chalk and cheese and demonstrate the diversity of this wonderful county. Both cities have an enormous amount of history. A large amount of Cambridge is taken up by the University, whilst Peterborough is home to a wonderful cathedral right in the city centre.
Cambridgeshire is definitely worth a visit (probably even more than one), but make sure you allow plenty of time because there really is so much to do that you'll struggle to cram it all in. Plan well and you will thoroughly enjoy it, so come along and visit the great county of Cambridgeshire.
